Fluorescent ballast for fluorescent ligihting fixtures

The fluorescent lighting fixtures produces light by activating selected phosphors on the inner surface of the bulb with ultraviolet energy which is generated by a mercury arc. Because of the characteristics of a gaseous arc, a ballast is needed to start and operate fluorescent lamps. The advantages of a fluorescent light source include improved efficacy and longer life than incandescent lamps. Efficacies for fluorescent lamps range anywhere from 45 to 107 lumens per watt. Disadvantages of fluorescent lamps include their large size for the amount of light produced. This makes light control more difficult which results in a diffuse
shadowless environment.Fluorescent lights are popular because of their energy efficiency and long lifespan compared to incandescent bulbs. However, fluorescent lights produce light in a different way from lights that use resistors, and they require specialized equipment in order to operate. The ballast is one of the most important parts of the fluorescent lamp, and a magnetic core was part of its original makeup. Today, electronic ballasts have replaced many of these older versions.

Fluorescent electronic ballast use solid state electronic circuitry to regulate starting voltage and to maintain proper operating current. Electronic ballasts produce light more efficiently than magnetic ballasts. Electronic ballasts are up to 25% more efficient than magnetic ballasts. Another advantage of electronic ballasts is that they eliminate visible flicker and audible hum. Electronic ballasts can operate from one to four lamps at a time. Electronic ballasts are most commonly used for T8 fluorescents and T5 fluorescents. Electronic ballasts are now being made to operate T12 fluorescents in both standard and high output. Over time, electronic ballasts will replace magnetic ballasts entirely.
