How to choose the fluorescent Electronic Ballasts?

The ballasts are the part of your fluorescent lights that allows the energy to enter the light bulb and make it give off light. It moderates the amount of energy that is allowed into the bulb, which keeps it from getting too much energy and burning out when you turn it on. This is a very important part of your fluorescent lighting fixture.

Ballasts are used to regulate the energy flow to light bulbs. If we were to run a light without a ballast and plug it into the wall it would explode. This is because light bulbs have a negative resistance, this means the energy the lamp draws will become greater and greater until it explodes. (If you were to throw a coin off the empire state building it would accelerate faster and faster until it hit the ground. The reason it would not kill somebody is because of air resistance and terminal velocity, these two items are similar to a ballast in the way they limit the speed of the penny, or in our case limit the current supplied to the lamp). When you have ballast for a 96 watt lamp, this means the ballast cuts the power from your wall outlet down to something usable by the 96 watt lamp but not so much that it would explode. If you plugged a 10 watt lamp into the 96 watt ballast it would explode because the ballast would be supplying it with enough power for a 96 watt lamp to a 10 watt lamp.If you need to replace the magnetic ballast in your fluorescent fixtures, consider using one of the improved varieties. These fluorescent ballasts, called improved magnetic ballasts and electronic ballasts, raise the efficiency of the fixture 12-30percent.

Choosing the right one for your needs can save you money. Magnetic ballasts were the first types used in fluorescent lighting. They use steel discs and wire (aluminum or copper) to control the amount of energy. This configuration generally produces a hum when in use that can be heard once the light is turned on. This hum is not caused by the magnetic ballast itself, this is because operate at 60Hz, which can be heard by the human ear. They also have a tendency to cause a flicker in the light when in use. Electronic ballasts are a much newer concept, they use a circuit board to regulate the amount of energy that is allowed to enter the bulb and operate at 40Hz to 20Hz, which is too high of a frequency to be heard by the human ear. This means that they do not cause that annoying audible hum when in use. Because the flow of energy is more regulated by the circuit board, they also do not have the flicker that magnetic ballasts cause. Now onto the important factors: saving energy and money. electronic ballasts are a little more expensive to produce, they are also more expensive to purchase. So does this mean that you will save more money buying fluorescent light bulbs with magnetic ballasts? No, it does not ! You will be able to save a small amount of money immediately, but in order to experience constant long term savings, you should look at electronic ballasts. Electronic ballasts regulate the energy used to operate the fluorescent light bulb much more precisely, and use less energy to produce the same amount of light.

Electronic Ballasts Advantages:

1. Green lighting, More Energy-saving than magnetic ballasts
2. Low harmonic distortion,Stable power control, wide voltage range
3. Full-functional protection
4. Modulating frequency, No acoustic resonance
5. Long-life guarantee
6. Easy maintenance
7. Sleek design, Light weight

This means that it will cost less to run the same amount of lights. Choose wisely!
